Basel organizes major inclusive events
The World Looked to Basel in 2025: With the Eurovision Song Contest ESC in May and the UEFA Women's Euro in July, two major international events took place in Basel. Volunteers collected information on the accessibility of locations in advance.
Accessibility of major events
Major events such as the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) or the UEFA Women's Euro (WEURO) 2025 attract many visitors, including people with disabilities or reduced mobility in the broadest sense, such as families with strollers, travelers with luggage or elderly people. But not every building, offer or event is accessible to them.
In order to be able to plan and prepare for the arrival and participation of this group of people at the event in advance, differentiated information about accessibility is required: Which hotel in the city center offers barrier-free rooms? Is there an elevator in the stadium that takes me to the top floor? Can the live broadcast on Barfüsserplatz also be watched in a wheelchair? Which café near the venue offers enough space for a visit with a stroller?

“When people with disabilities attend an event, they need to know what to expect locally. What I like about Ginto is that the information is presented in an attractive way and that swarm intelligence is used. Mapathon is helping to ensure that the two major events in Basel leave a lasting legacy.”
Traveling together for an accessible Basel
The aim of this project was to make the venues around the ESC and WEURO 2025 in Basel accessible to as wide a target group as possible, including people with disabilities.
In the run-up to the two major events, volunteers collected information on the accessibility of over 50 restaurants, hotels, bus stops and other locations near the most important event locations as part of a mapathon.
The recording was carried out by small teams with the help of Ginto. Participating in Mapathon is a formative and active experience for volunteers that is fun and at the same time raises awareness of the issue of inclusion.
This action was carried out by Basel tourism, the Swiss Barrier-Free Friends Association With the OK:GO initiative, who Emma Schaub Foundation And the Swisslos Fund Canton of Basel-Stadt supports.
